On July 24th 2010, two big city kids with a passion for nature, adventure and photography, but no mechanical knowledge, sense of direction or common sense, will set off East from Hyde Park in London. Destination – Mongolia. This journey will see them drive 10,000 miles, crossing 1/3 of the world, 18 countries, 3 deserts, 5 mountain ranges and the Pamir Highway, the second highest road in the world. Their chosen steed – a blue, 0.8 litre Perodua Nippa, a vehicle barely suitable for a trip to the supermarket, let alone a trans-continental rally. Their goal – to reach Ulaan Baatar in 35 days, preferably in one piece, and without having to exchange their car as scrap for a camel.
Apart from having fun, we hope to raise thousands of pounds for CNCF (the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation), a non-governmental organisation working in Mongolia to support and protect children who are homeless and/or at risk of abuse, trafficking and child labour.
Please help by donating to Team Wanderlust by clicking on the button below. Our trip would not be possible without the help of people like you, and because the car is donated at the end of the rally, the money goes indirectly to charities supported by the AFDM. If you would rather donate to the CNCF directly, please click on the Just Giving button to the right, or for more information, follow the links at the top of the page to the rest of our site.
We have plenty of advertising space on the site, the car and merchandise and we would love to hear from you and any of your friends that might be interested in corporate sponsorship. Please e-mail us on teamwanderlust2010@gmail.com.
So what’s this Mongol Rally all about?
In a nutshell, a few years ago, a few guys who called themselves the Adventurists, realised that backpacking wasn’t enough of a challenge and decided to have a race to Mongolia in utterly inappropriate cars. 4 of the 6 cars made it. Each year, more and more teams joined until this year 480 teams have registered to set out from the UK, Spain and Italy, meet up in Prague and then go their separate ways to Ulaan Baatar.
For more background info, have a look on our other pages, go to the Adventurists website , who are organising the rally, or check out these videos:
